Become the person that people want to work for

Being the Boss in 2021 - it's tough. Many of us are losing staff, not attracting good ones and others are beating a retreat. Too many of us tolerate poor attitude and performance, just making do.

But abdicating from our responsibilities as a Boss just leads to even more internal strife, poor culture and ineffectiveness. It’s no surprise that many of the bosses I speak to are not enjoying work.

But I’ve also not met anyone who, in spite of the current challenges, DIDN’T want to be a great boss. Everyone wants holistic success, rather than just financial. They want to be respected, feel positive, capable, in control. They want a great team who are happy, positive and effective.

So if everyone wants to be a great boss, why are so many people unable to get there?

Why is it so HARD to be a Great Boss?

From my observations and experience over 20+ years in leadership, I believe there are three reasons people find it hard to become a Great Boss:

1

They focus their study on one-off courses that make a difference for a while, but fail to take root in changing the way that they think, believe and act in the long term.

2

There is just too much content available, and they don't know where to start. The curse of the information age is that there is SO much content available. And so the busy Boss who is starved of time and attention faces a challenge in even getting started.

3

Bosses tend to get isolated. We saw the effects of that laid bare in the pandemic as people desperately sought clarity and support. This is why support webinars for dental leaders and my own Confident Leader Club were so important. They gave people a place to connect, discuss and receive support.

I have been in your shoes

My own journey as a Boss

I have been in your position. I know what it’s like to lead in difficult times and have to step up when you don't feel equipped.

In my 20 years in leadership positions, I have been a Boss, worked for some great Bosses, and been mentored by some of the greatest Bosses in the commercial, government and non-profit worlds.

I learned how to be a Great Boss, and I want to show you how you can be one too!

SOUNDS AMAZING, RIGHT?

“I now want to be the person that my team want to come and work for. I want my team to be the best they can be.”

Introducing...

The Great Boss Academy

The continuous development programme for Bosses that want to be their best!

The new world we live in has significantly greater challenges for Bosses than before.

And so for anyone who wants to be a Great Boss and experience the wellbeing, reward and success that come with it, a new approach is needed.

The Great Boss Academy is that approach.

let’s GET DOWN TO details

The Great Boss Academy

The Great Boss Academy is built around the ‘Great Boss 100’ - one hundred qualities of a great boss and a great business. Each of the six categories is an essential element of being a Great Boss and running a great business.

Great Bosses lead themselves first

Your Inner Leader

There's a reason all aircraft safety briefings include the phrase "put your own oxygen mask on first, before helping others."

You cant lead others if you're not first leading yourself well. Leadership starts with embracing your identity as a leader, and learning how to lead yourself.

Some of the qualities:

  • Self actualisation - I improve myself and engage in meaningful pursuits.
  • Independence - I maintain my convictions in the face of challenge and opposition.
  • Empathy - I understand and appreciate others' needs and feelings.
  • I am aware of, and adapt my style to facilitate constructive communication in varying situations.
  • Self regard - I am confident yet realistic in my

assessment of my abilities

Some of the qualities:

  • I follow through on my word with consistent action to build trust.
  • I model an unselfish attitude, putting team needs above short term business benefits.
  • I recognise and appreciate others systematically.
  • I promote and respect balance - respecting the boundaries of others' relationships and commitments outside work.
  • I model an attitude of responsibility - taking proactive ownership, giving credit for success and being accountable for mistakes.

Great Bosses define the narrative and expectations

Set the Tone

'You get what you expect or allow' and so setting the right tone in terms of culture, work ethic, attitude is critical. You must also lead by example. No amount of cultural definition will be able to overcome the impact of a Boss that does not follow through.

Great Bosses communicate and connect

Connecting

Connection is the first step to engagement which leads to collaboration. Knowing your people and being known by them builds trust and loyalty - vital for an effective and positive business.

Some of the qualities:

  • I take time annually to reflect, plan and engage the team in the strategy for the coming year.
  • I show humility - always being prepared to do what needs to be done for the good of the team and patients.
  • I have a low tolerance for bad attitudes, which I confront and correct with understanding and authority.
  • I have developed a common language which embodies my values, mission and purpose. This serves as a unifier for my team.
  • I ensure that the team learns together, as well as developing their own individual skills.

Some of the qualities:

  • I believe in co-creation - trusting that collaboration leads to better results.
  • I model servanthood - investing on behalf of others and finding joy in their success.
  • I have identified the simple, clear and memorable purpose of my business, and I communicate this frequently.
  • I have a written vision for the practice in 3 years time, which is clear, compelling, inspiring and regularly referenced.
  • I have defined the 3-5 values & associated behaviours that are critical for our success and fulfilling our purpose and vision.

Great Bosses Proactively Lead their Teams

Lead the Team

What's it like to be in your team? Are you controlling and intense or do you coach, support and empower your people so they can do their best work?

Some of the qualities:

  • I believe in co-creation - trusting that collaboration leads to better results.
  • I model servanthood - investing on behalf of others and finding joy in their success.
  • I have identified the simple, clear and memorable purpose of my business, and I communicate this frequently.
  • I have a written vision for the practice in 3 years time, which is clear, compelling, inspiring and regularly referenced.
  • I have defined the 3-5 values & associated behaviours that are critical for our success and fulfilling our purpose and vision.

Great Bosses know how to adapt and lead people as individuals

Lead Individuals

Emotional intelligence and agility are critical skills to develop, or you will struggle to effectively engage your people. You will need tact, empathy and courage to manage conflict successfully.

Some of the qualities:

  • I model 'Coaching Leadership' rather than 'Command and Control'.
  • I carry out team surveys where appropriate to assess morale and seek feedback/ideas.
  • New team members follow an onboarding programme which includes briefing on culture, mission and how to achieve success.
  • Regular staff 1:1s are carried out to clarify objectives and development areas, but not raise performance issues for the first time.
  • Team members understand how they are going to be developed and what the development track is for their role.

Some of the qualities:

  • I monitor the practice's waste output, and have targets and initiatives to reduce our waste to landfill over time.
  • I have a policy in place to procure from ethical and responsible suppliers, and favour local independent businesses.
  • I have used whatever space I can externally to encourage bird and insect life and promote wellbeing for my team.
  • I partner with at least one charity which is a good fit for the practice either because of the sector or locality.
  • I provide opportunities and encourage my team to participate in charitable volunteering and fundraising on a regular basis.

Great Bosses run sustainable & responsible businesses

Responsible Business

The choices you make about how you will care for your people, protect the environment and contribute to your community. They're also smart choices for businesses who want to succeed today.

Serena Hoyte - new principal

I now understand my why, mission, values and culture. I've found that the appreciation of this is crucial.

I can now apply all my learnings to the new practice I've bought to hit the ground running and start how I mean to go on.

Susan Watt - principal

I joined to increase my confidence - being a leader when you're an introvert can be difficult.

I now understand the team more and the need to take more time to focus our team on the destination. I now realise the importance of understanding that if people know why they are being asked to do something this really helps to get them to do what you ask.

Steph Durham - Principal

I really enjoyed having access to Mark and being surrounded by non-judgemental and supportive colleagues.

Implementing even very small elements of the course has made a significant difference to my team's attitude, and the patients comment on the positive feeling in the practice.

Amazing course - I would do it again!

SOME COMMON QUESTIONS WE often HEAR

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to join the calls live?

No. Everything is recorded and available in the GBA portal. If you do join live you benefit from the interaction and discussion, but I also hear that members find watching the replays equally useful.

The live calls take place between 7pm and 8pm on the first Monday of the month.

So don't let a regular Monday night commitment stand in the way of you joining.

What support is there?

As well as the support of other group members (a frequent comment in member feedback), you also have unlimited access to me via email with questions.

You have the opportunity to seek feedback through the weekly reflective journal, and I also comment on focus projects. You can also schedule support calls to chat through any particular issues.

What are the impact projects like?

I understand that the last thing you need on your plate is another thing 'to do' that you don't get a benefit from.

That's why the impact for you each month is tailored. Firstly, you choose between 1 and 3 things to work on depending on your schedule. Secondly the impacts are designed to be immediately implementable and applicable. They will take from 1 minute a day to perhaps an hour in a week.

Is this just for Principals or the main business leader?

No. Your membership includes three seats for the other members of your team that would benefit from the programme. Alumni include Associates, Practice Managers and 'soon to be' managers. I've also worked with Sales Managers and others from different sectors.

I actively encourage you to involve other managers in your team. The only requirement is that members would like to become a Great Boss, and that they're committed to making it happen.
