From Overwhelmed to On Track: Goals That Actually Work

January 20, 20254 min read

Setting goals is easy, but sticking to them is a different story. Many people start the year with big aspirations, only to lose momentum a few weeks in. But the key to success isn’t just writing down your goals—it’s creating a clear, actionable plan that keeps you focused and inspired throughout the year. This is the process embodied in my ‘Get Your Great Bossing Year in Gear’ (snappy right?!) course. Here’s how to set goals that actually work.

The GYGBYIG Process: Turning Goals Into Progress

GYGBYIG process is all about helping you move from feeling stuck or overwhelmed to making real, meaningful progress. It’s not about doing more—it’s about focusing on what matters and creating a system that works for you. Here’s how it breaks down:

Reflect: Start With the End in Mind

Everything starts with reflection. It’s about stepping back and asking yourself the big questions:

  1. What really matters to me?

  2. What do I want to achieve this year, or in the next five years?

  3. How do I want to be remembered?

One of my favourite tools is the “Wheel of Life.” It helps you take a snapshot of where you’re at in different areas—work, health, relationships—and identify what needs attention. Another powerful exercise is writing your “obituary,” which might sound odd, but it really clarifies your values and long-term goals.

Reflection gives you a foundation. It ensures that what you’re working towards isn’t just a list of random tasks but a plan rooted in what’s truly important.

Set Clear Intentions

Once you’ve reflected, it’s time to focus. Choose three key areas to work on over the next 90 days—no more, no less. Being specific here is crucial.

For example, instead of saying, “I want to be healthier,” try: “I will exercise three times a week and drink two litres of water every day.” This kind of clarity not only gives you direction but makes it easier to track your progress.

When you set clear intentions, you give yourself a realistic and achievable target to aim for. It’s simple, focused, and effective.

Build Sustainable Habits

Big goals are only achievable if you have the habits to support them. This step is about breaking your goals into small, daily actions that you can actually stick to.

Start small and build momentum. Maybe it’s committing to 10 minutes of journaling in the morning or a short walk after lunch. Avoid overloading yourself with too many changes at once. Small, consistent steps add up over time.

Also, think about what to avoid. Are there distractions or habits holding you back? Limiting time on your phone or saying no to unnecessary commitments can free up energy for what really matters.

Create a System That Works for You

This is where it all comes together. Your system should be simple, personal, and adaptable. Here’s how you can build yours:

  • Mental Models: Use strategies like habit stacking (linking a new habit to an existing one) or the Two-Day Rule (never skip a habit more than once).

  • Track Your Progress: Find a method that works for you—whether it’s a journal, an app, or a spreadsheet. Tracking helps you stay focused and celebrate small wins.

  • Accountability: Share your goals with someone you trust, like a mentor, friend, or coach. Having someone to check in with keeps you motivated and on track.

Your system doesn’t need to be perfect—it just needs to work for you.

Celebrate Wins and Adjust

Don’t skip this step! Celebrating your wins, no matter how small, is what keeps you motivated. Whether it’s treating yourself to something you enjoy or sharing your progress with loved ones, taking time to acknowledge your efforts is key.

And don’t forget to regularly review your goals. What’s working? What isn’t? Adjust as you go. Life changes, and your system should be flexible enough to change with it.

Start Small, Stay Consistent

The GYGBYIG process is simple, but it works. Reflect on what matters, set clear goals, build habits, create a system, and celebrate your progress. It’s not about doing everything—it’s about doing the right things.

So, what’s your next step? Take 10 minutes today to reflect and pick one area to focus on. Small, intentional actions can lead to big changes. You’ve got this!
