How to Encourage Accountability (Without Micromanaging)

February 09, 20251 min read

Why does it feel like you have to chase people to do their job?

I meet a lot of clients who are so nervous about delegating because of their past experience. Too many feel like they’re the only one keeping the wheels turning.

  • Chasing people to complete tasks (again).

  • Reminding them of what they already know.

  • Wondering why you have to care so much more than they do.

It’s exhausting. And let’s be honest—it makes you resentful.

But here’s the thing: Accountability isn’t about making people ‘do as they’re told’. It’s about making them care.

Why do people avoid responsibility?

Not because they’re lazy. Most of the time, it’s because they don’t feel:

  • Safe to make decisions

  • Trusted to take ownership

  • Clear on what’s expected

How to create accountability (without breathing down their necks)

✅ Stop answering every question immediately

When someone asks, “What should I do about this?”, respond with:

“What do you think?”

Over time, they’ll start solving problems on their own.

✅ Switch from ‘checking up’ to ‘checking in’

Instead of: “Did you do that yet?”

Try: “How’s that coming along? Need anything from me?”

✅ Recognise effort, not just results

Accountability isn’t about finishing a task—it’s about owning it. Call out the process, not just the outcome.

People want to take ownership—but only if they feel trusted to do it. Start small, and let them prove you right.
